“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship. Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.” Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)
January 4 – Don’t Underestimate the Battle
Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
One of the realities that we need to contend with on this journey is that there are forces working against us. Our hearts are deceitful, our flesh leads us contrary to the Spirit, and the evil one is seeking to destroy us. In order for us to be successful, we need God.
"The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" Jeremiah 17:9
"For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out." Romans 7:18
"Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour." 1 Peter 5:8
Apply God’s Word to your life.
When have you battled your flesh or the deceitfulness of your own heart?
When are you most vulnerable to attacks from the evil one?
Father, I praise you that there is no evil in You. I can trust You with my life on this journey. Help me grasp that my heart does not always want what is best for me. Help me not trust my desires unless they line up with Yours. Help me rely on You to overcome the spiritual warfare in my life. God, take this deceitful, flesh driven heart of mine and transform it to be like Yours. Amen.
