Don't Take Advantage

Cathy Hurtado

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

"It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.  The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before.  For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life."  I Thessalonians 4:3-7

Not only has God asked us to exercise self-control in our sex lives, He has asked us to not take advantage of a brother or sister.  Practically this means we are not to tempt, entice or force another to violate God’s plan for sex.  This means you don’t seduce another to meet your needs. This also means we don’t dress to entice another with our body.  I would even say this would include not exposing others, especially children, to pornography and other sexual situations (in person or via media) that would set them to see such behavior as normal and acceptable.

Apply God’s Word to your life.

Take some time and allow God to search your heart.  In what ways have you been wronged in the sexual area?  Seek help for healing and forgiveness if you need it.   In what ways have you been a part of wronging or taking advantage of another in the sexual realm?  What media have you allowed in your home or exposed to others that may have hurt them?  What changes will you make so that you do not defraud anyone in the future?  Is there anyone’s forgiveness you need to seek?

Father, sometimes it is painful to look at the truth.  Please forgive me for hurting others when I may not even have been aware of it.  Give me discernment so that I do not wrong or take advantage of anyone.  Give me the courage to make the changes I need to at home and the guts to not worry about what anyone is thinking other than You.  Amen.

"Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another.  Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister."  Romans 14:13

"Flee from sexual immorality.  All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body.  Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price.  Therefore honor God with your bodies."  1 Corinthians 6:18-20
