“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and began to sink, cried, “Lord save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “ Matthew 14:27-31a
When Peter took his eyes off of Jesus, he began to sink into the water and became scared.
What are the things that are distractions for you that cause you to take your eyes off of Jesus? What are the things that take place in your daily walk that seem so simple, but make you realize that you haven’t been spending time with God or readying his scriptures, going to church, or having your quiet time? FaceBook, Twitter, TV, sports, crafts, readying, friends, the computer….the list could go on and on and you might say, that’s not me, or I can still watch TV, read a book or check my FaceBook without it effecting my walk with the Lord. Yea, you are probably right! But, when that “something” causes you to take your eyes off of Jesus and you begin to sink, then yes, that is a distraction in your life. Are you willing to be honest with yourself and take a hard look at your spiritual walk with the Lord and admit that “Yes, the distraction do come my way?”
I recently thought about this when we were at Summer Camp with our kids and we were talking about this exact thing. We asked them, “what distracts you in your journey?” How can someone like Peter with so much faith lose it in the time when he took his eyes off of Jesus? God’s gives you the power to overcome. We need to remember that and the fact that we have to keep depending on God’s power in our lives.
Therefore, what distractions are in your life that you need to deal with? Make it a matter of prayer and ask God to show you. Remember, “Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him.” Matthew 14:31a.
