Crucified with Christ

Cathy Hurtado

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.  The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me."  Galatians 2:20

Galatians 2:20 was my first "life verse".  I love it because it depicted the transformation that God had done in my life.  Today, 35 years later, I see it in three important ingredients for my walk with Christ.

First, there is the daily challenge to die to self and let Christ live in and through me.  Thirty five years ago, I was an insecure, whishy-washy, people pleaser.  I was happy to be rid of my old self and to let Christ lead.  It didn't take long, though, for me to discover that part of me didn't always want to let Christ lead.  I wanted things my way and I always had good reasons.  I...I...I...  How easy it was for life to shift from being all about Jesus to being all about me.  This verse reminds me to embrace God's Word as God's will and daily surrender saying, "God, Your will, not mine."

Secondly, the Christian life is to be lived by faith.  Faith is taking God at His Word and living accordingly.  Faith involves trust, being dependent on God, saying, "I need You, God, to accomplish this".  If I get to the end of my day and I haven't thought about God, my heart hasn't rejoiced in His presence.  I haven't sent up prayers for wisdom or help, or expressed gratitude, then I must conclude that I lived that day by my power and not by faith.

Thirdly, it reminds me to walk in God's love.  God's unfailing love enables me to approach God in my brokenness, to admit my failures, and to yield control back to Him.  It also reminds me to extend the love to others which He has extended to me.

Father, I surrender.  Help me to die to my will, my ways, and my desires, and allow Christ to live in me.  Give me the faith to embrace Your Word and live accordingly and to say, "Your will, not mine."  Thank you for demonstrating Your unfailing love for me on the cross.  I love you.
