"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." I Peter 2:9
A few months ago, the world marveled at the Royal Wedding of William and Catherine in England. The ceremony was a glorious display of "pomp and circumstance" with no expense spared. I honestly wasn't interested personally, but it seemed that the media was buzzing about this wedding. I remember I just happened to still be up at 3:00 a.m. that day for some odd reason reading while my wife was also still up cleaning and baking. We were talking and somehow we decided to tune in to the wedding online. It was an amazing and perfectly crafted spectacle to see, although I think I fell alseep half way through it. Most recently, the media followed intently as the royal couple visited North America. As a society, we are curious to see how the privileged people like Queens, Dukes, Duchesses, and Princes live. It seems that we have a fascination, or maybe even an obsession, with royalty and celebrity. I am amazed when I think that as followers of Christ, God has made us to be royalty!
God has chosen us and given us all the rights and privileges of spiritual royalty! He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the Sovereign Almighty God of the whole universe and we belong to Him. Sometimes we feel that we aren't special or that our lives don't count. We may feel that we are not good looking enough, talented enough, strong enough, smart enough, or rich enough. The truth is that we aren't special by ourselves, but because of God's spirit in us, through Christ we are special! God has given us a new identity and that identity is a royal, holy, special identity in Jesus Christ our Lord! We have been adopted into the royal family of God and we can enjoy all of the benefits that come with that. He has infused us with royal spiritual DNA. He has given us an unlimited supply of everything we need for life and godliness. He has called us to represent Him in the world and spread His kingdom of love and light to a world in need. We are truly privileged indeed!
The Lord has hand-picked us for a purpose: "that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light." Every follower of Christ is called to praise. It is not an option, but it is our calling and our purpose! While praise can include singing, it is so much more than that. We are called to outwardly, vocally, and demonstratively declare to the world that God is good and that His mercy endures forever. In the way that we work, speak, sing, and interact with others, we are to proclaim His praise!
What can we do today to represent the King and declare His praise?
What would it look like for you to turn your workplace or your home into a place of kingdom worship today?
Heavenly Father, You are the only sovereign King. I thank you for adopting me into Your royal family through the blood of Jesus Christ. Thank you for choosing me even though I don't deserve it. Thank you for loving me and filling me with Your Holy Spirit. I praise You today! Help me to declare Your praises in all that I do today. I belong to You. Use me to represent You and spread Your Word, Your love, and Your light today. In Jesus name. Amen.
