"Do not be misled; 'Bad company corrupts good character."' I Corinthians 15:33
What kind of friends do your kids choose? Ones that encourage them on, or ones that become stumbling blocks and hold them back?
The day we sent our son off to school for the first time was the day he started being influenced by others. We no longer were the primary influence in his life. What friends was he going to choose? Who was he going to play with on the playground? Who was he going to come home talking about as his new friend? It's a lot to be praying and thinking about. (Notice that I said praying first).
So, as your children start choosing their friends, help them to understand the impact that friends have on our lives. We are taught in Romans 12:5 that "in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others". Our kids want to belong and they look for friends to hang with, play with, or just talk with. The desire to belong is strong. In our world today, we are constantly bombarded with "I, I, I" and me, me, me". But, this is contrary to what God taught us in Romans. We all, including our kids, need others.
So, when your kids start forming those bonds with others, do you talk with them about who their friends are? We need to teach our kids how to make wise friend choices. Do you know their friends? Do you encourage them to invite their friends over so that you can get a better idea of who they are?
Can I challenge you to choose one night of your busy week to become Tech-Free and spend that time as a family keeping in touch with your kids and setting everything else aside? Consider letting them invite a friend over for a family game night. Think of the influence you can still have with your kids and possibly with their friends, big or small!
Father, help me to be the parent You want me to be as I guide my children in so many areas of their lives. Help my children to choose friends that know You and who will build them up and be positive influences in their lives.
