"What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the roofs. Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell." Matthew 10:27-28
The mistreatment of Christians is an ancient practice. It seems that this practice is hitting closer to home each day. Yet we are still called to be bold in our witness to the hope that we believe. If we deny Jesus Christ our Savior then He will deny us before the Father.
"͞Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in Heaven." Matthew 10:32-33
After the recent publicized event of Christian persecution, my daughter went to school and the entire class was posed this question by the English teacher, would you die for what you believe? My daughter who is the shiest and most introverted person I know answered yes to the question. She sent me a text message when class was over to tell me that she stood up for Christ and I was so pleased. I began sending her text messages of encouragement assuming she had the courage only because many others stood up for the same thing. Unfortunately my daughter responded with, ͞"No mom, there were not many other believers in class." As I paused in disappointment, I wondered if there were more believers in class, but chose not to stand up for fear in their hearts.
Jesus promised to send us a helper, someone who would teach us, lead us into truth and give us power. This Christian life is not something we are able to accomplish on our own, because we need help from the Holy Spirit. Christ tells us in His word to stay connected to Him, so that we will be able to walk in boldness and in courage. He does not give us a spirit of fear and timidity.
"And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever- the Spirit of truth." John 14:16-17
"But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 17:26-27
"But you will receive when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” Acts 1:8
"I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing." John 15:5
"For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control." 2 Timothy 1:7
What could you do to stand up for Christ in a world that challenges your faith? Will you ask God to give you courage and strength when you are faced with the opportunity to stand in boldness for Him?
