Blessed are the Poor in Spirit

Cliff Ellison

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."  Matthew 5:3

Jesus praised the humble, "The poor in spirit".  Humility is not an option for believers, it is essential if we want to walk with God.  We just need to take on the attitude of John the Baptist who said, "He must become greater; I must become less."

John was saying that He must decrease so that Jesus could increase.  Our goal as Christians is to become Christ-like and exhibit the Fruit of the Spirit (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control).

Humility shows a persons character which not only affects his/her life, but also the lives of those around them.  Philippians 2:3 says, "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.   In our daily walk as Christians, we will sometimes be bombarded with situations that seem to attack us personally and our first response is to react in a prideful manner.  But, if we remember to be poor in spirit, we will gain the power of the spirit and a godly solution of the problem.

Where the Spirit of the Lord Is

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is peace

Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is love

There is comfort in life's darkest hour

There is light and life

There is help and power in the Spirit

In the Spirit of the Lord
