“I will always remind you about these things, even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught.” 2 Peter 1:12
Have you ever forgotten a truth or promise from God’s Word? Have you ever forgotten God’s faithfulness? Have you ever forgotten God’s goodness to you? If we are being truthful, I think we all need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness and goodness to us. Once again, we need to be reminded; we need to remember what we have been taught in Scripture. We need to constantly learn and rediscover God’s promises, even though we already know them.
Maybe there was a time in the past when you faced a financial crisis. You had overdue bills to pay, rent that you were behind on, a car payment that needed to be made as well as needing to put food on the table for your family. The stress and pressure probably overwhelmed you. Maybe you had many sleepless nights and wondered how you were going to get out of this jam, this ugly situation. But you prayed and trusted the Lord, and He came through for you. God was faithful and He was good to you!
You continued to work hard at your job; a loyal committed employee that earned a good wage. You were diligent, demonstrated integrity and were recognized with promotions along the way. Everything went along great for 25 years. Then the day came, you were blindsided and unaware of what was going to hit you. Maybe the company needed to downsize and lay people off. Or maybe someone made false allegations against you in retaliation. You find yourself back to square one. Out of a job and faced with a financial crisis again. You find yourself angry, confused and frustrated. How do you respond? As humans, our initial response or thought is usually panic, fear and being totally freaked-out.
But wait, God’s Word says we should always be reminded and stand firm in the truth you have been taught. That even though we already know God’s promises, we need to rediscover them again and again. That God has been faithful to me. That God has been good to me. That God provided for me in the past. That nothing is too difficult for God. That I serve a big God and He is more than able. All of us need to be reminded of this truth.
Maybe you or a family member has been very sick and the doctor can’t diagnosis the illness. You look to God. You ask your family and friends to pray, to be healed by God. Then the Lord touches you or a family member’s life and brings healing. Then several years down the road you find that sickness or another illness has struck again. But this time it’s a little more serious than before. And all of a sudden, you hit the panic button; or do you?
I can bear witness to both of these scenarios. When life doesn’t make sense and adversity knocks on your door, what do you cling too? Where do you turn? Where do you find hope? For me, I cling to the promise of Romans 8:28 where the Bible says, “And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.”
My friend, I encourage you to memorize this verse and be reminded of the truth you have been taught.
