Be Filled With the Spirit

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God, this is your spiritual act of worship.  Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is, his good, pleasing and perfect will.”  Romans 12:1-2 (NIV 1984)

January 21 – Be Filled with the Spirit

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. 

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

Read Romans 12:1-2 out loud.  It’s our verse of the year and we want to learn it.

"Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit. 19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord, 20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. 21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ."  Ephesians 5:17-21

The main command in this passage is “be filled with the Spirit.”  We are filled with the Spirit when we allow the Spirit to be the lead of our lives. When one is drunk, the alcohol controls behavior but there are many things other than alcohol which can control our lives - the pursuit of riches, the want of power, drugs, pornography, shopping, food, etc.  When any of these things control our minds and hearts, we are not filled with the Spirit. Let me remind you that it is God who transforms.  The more you surrender to God and follow His ways, the more transformation you’ll see. God loves us in spite of our sin, but His plan is to deliver us from our sin and transform us. 

Apply God’s Word to your life.

What competes with the Spirit for control of your life?

Take a moment and confess that to God.

How do verses 19-21 describe the behavior of one who is filled with the Spirit?

Take a moment and ask God to fill you with His Spirit and lead your life.

Try to notice when the Holy Spirit nudges you with truths from God’s Word.

Father, I praise and thank You that You gave us Your Spirit to help us live a life that is pleasing to You.  I am so sorry for the things I allow to lead my life instead of You.  Fill me with Your Spirit today.  Guide me with Your Word.  Help me to notice the Spirit’s leading in my life.  I want to be transformed.  Amen.
