Be blessed because of it
"Blessed are all who fear the Lord, who walk in obedience to him. You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Yes, this will be the blessing for the man who fears the Lord. May the Lord bless you from Zion; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life. May you live to see your children’s children—peace be on Israel." Psalm 128
I often say I could do just about anything for ten minutes. Unfortunately so many things that we do on a daily basis have to be done for a much longer period of time. Raising children can go on for more than eighteen years and caring for your aging parents may go on for just as long. I confess I do get tired sometimes; do you?
We decided to home school our kids because my daughter had some health issues that would keep her out of school for most of the time. I started with a mind determined on keeping a schedule and I trained the kids to do the same. In the mist of schooling there were meals to cook, a house to clean and many other chores to do. I felt like a hamster going around and around on a yellow wheel!
One morning I was physically and mentally exhausted, but there was so much to still get done. While the kids sat at their desk working on the morning lesson I stepped out of our home-school-classroom where they wouldn’t see me. In the hallway I stood praying and I fell to my knees with my bible in hand. My eyes were closed and I let the bible fall to the floor and when I opened my eyes the pages were opened to Psalms 128. I didn’t think much of the incident until I read the scripture. I saw that what I did in obedience to God on a regular basis was good and I needed to stay encouraged. When discouragement crept back in from time to time I learned to go back to Psalm 128 and pray to God.
After home schooling our kids for eight years and it was time for the kids to go to school outside of our home I had to trust God. They are both in high school now and we haven’t home schooled them in five years. I watched my son and daughter drive off to school yesterday. I wanted to savor the moment of watching them unnoticed by anyone. I remembered that I was sitting on the floor in the same spot ten years ago when God encouraged me to keep going forward.
What is God calling you to do for a short or extended period of time? Are you tired of doing what may be earning you an eternal reward in heaven? Will you quit? Or will you keep your eyes on the goal He has for you and be blessed because of it?
