"As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God; my soul thirsts for God for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?" Psalm 42:1-2
I love to drink an ice cold frosty glass of water on a hot day! Many times when the temperatures reach the triple digits where we live, there is nothing more satisfying than that glass of water! Sometimes if I get so busy that I forget to drink water, I will begin to feel tired and get headaches. I have realized that I need water every day in order to function and maintain good health.
Our physical bodies need water to survive. We can only survive for days without water. If we don't drink enough water every day, we become dehydrated. Symptoms of mild dehydration include: fatigue, weakness, thirst, loss of appetite, increased heart rate, dry mouth, and dry skin. More severe dehydration can include: headaches, nausea, muscle cramps, seizures, abdominal pain, dim vision and unconsciousness. Water makes life possible! A person will die more quickly from dehydration than he will from starvation!
Just like our physical bodies need water for refreshment and survival, we need the water of the Spirit of God in order to thrive spiritually. Sometimes we can be suffering from spiritual dehydration. Just as physical dehydration causes the body to start shutting down, so spiritual dehydration can start causing the soul to become numb and start shutting down. We can become worn out and bitter and unable to see clearly. We can begin to shrivel up and become unfruitful.
Jesus came to save us from spiritual dehydration. He brought Living Water for us to drink. Jesus gives us the pure stuff; not stagnant, dirty or poisoned water. He says, "Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scriptures have said, rivers of living water will flow from within them." (John 7:37b-38) That living water is available to us through trusting in Jesus Christ alone. When we have a relationship with Christ, He gives us a never ending supply of Living Water. In order to take advantage of that water, we need to spend time at the WELL!
As we face our day today, ask God to give you a real thirst for Him. We can't make it without Him! We live in a world that can feel like a parched desert. We face many situations that can turn up the temperature of life. We may interact with many spiritually dehydrated people. It is the Holy Spirit, living within us through faith that can fill our lives with renewed life. God gives us living water at the well of His Holy presence as we spend time with Him. Let's drink from His abundant fountain and share it with a dry world. Are you thirsty today?
We thirst for You, we search for you, in a dry and barren land
We're longing for Your hand to guide us to a place where You can cleanse us with Your rain
Baptize us once again, we thirst for You, O Lord we are waiting, let Your river flow
Come flood our hearts again, quench our thirsty souls
