Are you a Titus 2 person?

Debbi Goolsby

"Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God.  They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers.  Instead, they should teach others what is good.  These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands.  Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.”  Titus 2:3-5

As a young woman, when I first became involved in church ministry, I remember that I wanted to attend the Sunday School class of those older than me, much older!  You see, I’m trying not to say “old person” because I’m now in that category according to all the surveys I’ve seen.  Not because that is what people call me, but because of the perception!  Okay, let me get back on point.  I really wanted to learn what they knew both spiritually and practically.  “Grandpa Dave” was always ready to give advice when asked for it and he always pointed you back to God and the spiritual side of his advice.  I looked up to Grandpa Dave until the day God called him home.  I knew that I wanted to be that kind of person when I “matured”, to the younger lives.

I’m readying Titus 2 and we are told to train the younger woman.  “These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children,”.  These verses go on to also challenge men the same way. We must be an example to the younger men & women.

I’ve now switched rolls!  I now need to be the teacher and remember to live by example.  What God taught me (through the Carol’s & Grandma Gladys), is that I need to be showing biblical encouragement and truth through my actions and words to the younger women.  Isn’t my ultimate goal to bring others to a saving knowledge of eternal life?  Yes it is!

Titus 2:15 says, “You must teach these things and encourage the believers to do them.”

God brings people into our lives for many reasons.  Some to teach, some to be taught by, some to love, some to be taught how to love, some to mentor, or just being a spiritual example.  My goal is to continually strive to live out Titus 2 and always be watching where God leads me or to whom; that I may be more fully in His work and be ready when He calls me to “train” another.  I will always be learning through others and hope that others can learn through me.

Father, help me to keep my eyes open to women who are in need and desire mentoring.  And thank you for the many blessings that You have given to me.
