A Wonderful Calling, Part 2
“All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:18-21).
Paul alludes to the second feature of our calling in the verse above: We are called to be ambassadors. As ambassadors, God gives us a specific message to be given to people. We do not belong to ourselves, but rather to God:
“Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Because we belong to God, we make it our aim to please Him (2 Corinthians 5:9). Moreover, we make it our aim to carry His message. If an ambassador failed to carry the message of the person or nation that sent him, he would soon be withdrawn as ambassador. Some churches today preach a different message than we find in the Bible. But God has given us the ministry of reconciliation, compelling people to be reconciled to God. Along the way, we seek to heal the wounds and encourage wherever we can. But we cannot please the Master if we carry a different message than the one He entrusted us with. We cannot help people find the right way unless we point them to Christ.
This calling lasts for a lifetime. What a joy to testify of God’s gracious offer of salvation in Christ. Let us pray for opportunities to share the light of Christ to a world oppressed by sin and misery. We have a great message to spread, and may God fan the flames of His people today to spread the message of His love to the nations.
We do not denigrate other good messages such as helping the poor, educating the ignorant and doing good to people. But we must focus on our main calling in life, to reach people and train them up in the Word of God. May God find us faithful in this, and thus increase our joy.
