A Simple Gesture

Cliff Ellison

"Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!"  Psalm 133:1

How good are you at being the first to initiate a greeting to someone?  Sometimes we get so busy in our lives that we too often become oblivious to the people around us.  We are so absorbed in our current situations that our surroundings are unseen because of our self-imposed tunnel vision.  The only objects seen are those directly in front of us.  Our goal is to make it from point A to point B.  If anyone or anything gets in the way, we just step aside and complete our journey.  Yes, I’m being a little over dramatic, but the truth of the matter is that more than often we omit the characteristic of God, which is Love.

People are uniquely made by God in His image with the ability to fill and express emotions.

"Love one another with brotherly affection.  Outdo one another in showing honor."  Romans 12:10

Just the simply act of acknowledging someone can make someone’s day.  It can give them a sense of belonging and brighten their day.

"Gracious words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the body."  Proverbs 16:24

I once read, “Kind words are wholesome and health to the bones, and sweet to the soul.  They make the bones, which sin has broken and put out of joint, to rejoice.  The bones are the strength of the body; and the good word of God is a means of spiritual strength, curing the diseases that weaken us.” {Matthew Henry}

The good word of God is any act of kindness.  It can be as simple as a gesture.

Next time you are passing by someone, take a moment smile and just say hello!
