A New Shirt

Doug Story

"Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience."  Colossians 3:12

A couple times a year at our house we have a tradition.  We go through our closets, get rid of old clothes that don’t fit as originally intended, or that have been worn so much that they now look like a complete and total mess.  Every once in a while, this day sneaks up on me and I don’t have time to prepare.  You might be asking, "How do you prepare for such a day"?  For me it is easy.  I hide my old shirts.  Yeah, I said it.  I hide the old shirts that mean so much to me and that my wife thinks as totally ridiculous.  These shirts all have a story.  The first time I went paintballing, the shirt I wore when my team won, that concert I went to, the one with the funny saying on it that nobody laughs at, but I think is totally hilarious.  For me each of theses shirts tell a story from my past.  My younger, more athletic, back when Doug used to be cool past.  Let me assure you, I don’t need these shirts,  I have plenty and I have the ability to get new ones if I want, but sometimes I just like to hold onto the old stuff.

In the Book of Colossians, Paul is writing about our NEW life in Jesus.  He is telling us what our new life in Jesus should look like.  In verse 12, Paul specifically tells us what we should clothe ourselves in.  He explains to us that through Jesus we should look and act different.  He says,  “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”  First and foremost, He reminds us that we are chosen.  Doesn’t it feel good to be picked?  God chooses each of us as His dearly loved child.  We are bought and paid for by Jesus’ blood, chosen to be a forgiven and redeemed child of God.  Now that we are chosen by God, we should represent Him accordingly.  What does that look like?  I’m glad you asked.  We should wear clothes, have bumper stickers and post status updates that talk about compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Right?  No.  We should clothe ourselves in compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  That means how we act, how we talk, how we live should be filled with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  These are the characteristics of Jesus.  When we are His, we should look like him.  We should live like Him.

We are new creations in Jesus and for some of us, we need to change clothes.  Get rid of the old.  Get rid of the past.  We need to start clothing ourselves in Jesus, and the best place to start is with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Dear Heavenly Father, fill us with YOUR compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Help us to live in a way that displays your compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience to the world around us.  Use us as a light into the darkness.
