"If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!" Ecclesiastes 4:10
My parents are awesome, godly parents and I love them deeply. Recently, my mother fell and broke her pelvis which took a lot of time to heal. As I was visiting her daily at a wonderful rehab center, where she reluctantly agreed to go, I noticed many older adults that seemed to have no visitors and no one to talk with. This truly broke my heart. How lonely it must be to sit there day after day hoping that the nurse will take an extra couple minutes just to talk with you, that the visitor walking down the hallway will stop in to say, "Hi", that there may be a piece of the mail with my name on it, or that my phone may ring with someone asking how my day is going. Each day, my mom had at least 2 visitors come in and talk with her. As I walked past the room next to my mom's, I noticed a beautiful lady just watching out the door. I decided to stop and see her that day. I knew her name because it was on the door. "Hi Carolyn. My name is Debbie. How are you today?" Each day, that would be my first visit for a few minutes before seeing mom. Carolyn was a joy to talk with and we talked about her family and her church.
Which one of your friends has "fallen down" that needs your help? Will someone pick you up when you fall? Who doesn't have that friend? How can you be an encouragement to others? Maybe join a small group or serve in a ministry to build up friendships? Consider becoming a part of the Pastoral Care Ministry that visits shut-in's, or those that are in the hospital. Who do you know that may be alone today?
Father, help me to keep my eyes open to those that may need a kind word, a helping hand, or just a simple note to let them know that they are loved. Help me to share Your love with others.
"I'll Be a Friend of His"
When I think how Jesus suffered on the cross for me
Dying there in shame and agony
So that I could be redeemed and live eternally
I can do no less than now exclaim
I'll be a friend of His through all my days
I'll walk life's road with Him and sing His praise
Tho others pass Him by and walk away
I'll be a friend of His, His will obey
I never could repay the debt I owe
For all He's done for me full well I know
But I can live for Him who died for me
And be a friend of His for eternity
