“Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.”
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
Numbers 13:30-32 - "But Caleb quieted the people before Moses and said, “Let us go up at once and occupy it, for we are well able to overcome it.” 31 Then the men who had gone up with him said, “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are.” 32 So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height."
Caleb and Joshua were the minority – men who desired to please and obey God.
What did Caleb tell Israel (30)?
The ten were the majority (the crowd).
What did they tell Israel (31-32)?
Israel made the fateful decision to follow the crowd and it cost them 40 years of wandering in the desert, and their inheritance. Joshua and Caleb had to endure the desert consequences of Israel’s poor decision, but later they got to lead the next generation into the Promised Land with the blessing of God.
Galatians 1:10 - "For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ."
The apostle Paul understood the struggle we all face. We have two choices, to please people or to please God.
Apply God’s Word to your life:
- Ask God to examine your heart. In what situations are you most tempted to abandon God and follow the crowd?
- What consequences have you received from following the crowd?
- What would it have looked like to please God in that situation?
- Ask God to give you a heart that desires to please Him above all else.
Father, thank you for all the examples You have given to me in the Bible. Show me how much I am influenced by the people around me. Give me the courage and the desire to please You above all else. Amen.
