40 Days of Prayer - Pray With Thanksgiving - Day 31

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice."  Philippians 4:4

Begin your time with God in prayer:

Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:

The attitude with which we approach prayer is very important.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 - 16 Rejoice always; 17 pray without ceasing; 18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

How often are we to rejoice (vs. 16)?

How long should we pray (vs. 17)?

In what situations should we give thanks (vs. 18)?

Colossians 4:2 - Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;

With what attitude should we approach God in prayer?

I used to dislike it when airplanes took off and made a sharp right turn or a complete one-eighty. What calmed my heart was a simple prayer, “God, thank you that I am saved because life in Your presence is better than anything this world has to offer.” It helped me look at my situation from an eternal perspective.

Apply God’s Word to your life:

  • Give God thanks for the specific blessings in your life.

  • Thank God that He drew you into a relationship with His Son and gave you eternal life.

  • Thank God that He is sufficient to walk you through the storms of life.

  • Thank Him for the trials that refine your faith in God.

  • Thank Him that His will is better than your will.

Father, in a world where there is so much bitterness and hatred, help me to cultivate a thankful heart. Forgive me for all the times I have been ungrateful. Help me to focus on who You are, what You’ve done for me and what You continually provide for me to face the challenges of this world. Amen.

Related verses to meditate on:

Colossians 3:17 - And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Ephesians 5:18b - …be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Daniel 6:10 - Now when Daniel knew that the document was signed, he entered his house (now in his roof chamber he had windows open toward Jerusalem); and he continued kneeling on his knees three times a day, praying and giving thanks before his God, as he had been doing previously.

I Timothy 2:1 - First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men…
