40 Days of Joy - Whatever is True - Day 38

"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice."  Philippians 4:4

Begin your time with God in prayer:

Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:

Our power is not in positive thinking, it is in biblical thinking. Biblical thinking leads to healthy emotions and godly behavior. Ungodly (worldly) thinking leads to unhealthy emotions and ungodly behavior.

Hebrews 4:12 - For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

What can the Word of God do that will help us to identify our ungodly thoughts?

2 Timothy 3:16-18 - 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

What profit is there in spending time each day in God’s Word?

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

What happens in our hearts when we allow God’s Word to dwell in our hearts and our minds?

Apply God’s Word to your life:

  • Pick one area where your behavior shows you the need to refocus your mind.
  • Allow the Word and Spirit of God to judge the thoughts and intentions of your heart. What ungodly thoughts motivate that behavior? (Truth is painful – that’s why the author of Hebrews calls it a two-edged sword.)
  • Confess and rejoice in God’s forgiveness.
  • Replace your wrong thinking with God’s truth and live it out.

Father, You know my heart better than I do. Help me to see the motives and thoughts behind my ungodly thoughts, attitudes and actions. Forgive me for acting out of my sinful heart and not according to Your Word and by the power of Your Spirit. Teach me how to renew my mind with Your Word and put this into practice each day. Amen.
