"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
Ephesians 4:22-24 - 22That, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, 23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.
What are we to do with our wrong thinking (vs. 22)? What specific thoughts do you need to lay aside?
With what are we to replace it (vs. 24)?
How does Paul describe the new self (vs. 24)?
How do we put on the new self (vs. 23)?
Psalm 139:23-24 - Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24 And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
How do we discover what is in our hearts?
2 Corinthians 10:5 - We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.
What are we to do with our ungodly thoughts?
We refocus our thinking by identifying our ungodly thoughts, taking them captive (not letting them rule) and then replacing them with what the Bible teaches about how we should think and act. This process is called renewing our minds. For example: Things didn’t go my way and I am angry. Old self – because I’m angry, I am going to take my anger out on everyone I encounter. New self – God’s Word says “Be angry and don’t sin.” I’m angry. God, help me to treat those I encounter with Your love.
Apply God’s Word to your life:
- Take the ungodly thought you discovered yesterday and take it captive. Don’t let it determine how you feel and act. With what truth from God’s Word can you replace it?
- Take another ungodly thought from your life. What feelings or actions come from that thought? Take it captive. Don’t let it determine your attitude and behavior. With what truth from God’s Word can you replace it?
Father, thank you for giving me Your Word and Your Spirit. Help me to reprogram my mind with Your Word. Search my heart. Show me the truth about my thoughts. Help me to take them captive and replace them with truth from Your Word. Amen.
