"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
Last weekend, we watched a video clip about learning to ride a bicycle that had been built to work opposite of a regular bicycle. It took 8 months of practice to retrain an adult brain to successfully ride that bicycle. As we seek to live joyfully in our stressful world, it is going to take practice in order to master it. Like the bike rider, at first we may fall with every attempt to live biblically. But, as we persevere, getting back up and practicing, we will tip over less and less. We will wobble longer until eventually, one day, renewing our minds and living rightly will be as natural as riding a normal bike is for us today.
Paul said in Philippians 4:9, “What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
According to Paul, what were the four things the Philippians were to practice?
What would those four things produce in their lives?
Matthew 7:24-27 - 24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. 25 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. 26 But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. 27 The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.
How does Jesus describe the person who puts Jesus’ words into practice (vs. 24)?
What happened to him when the storms hit (vs. 25)?
How did Jesus describe the man who did not put His words into practice (vs. 26)?
What happened to him when the storms came (vs. 27)?
Proverbs 24:16 - For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.
What do we need to do if we are going to learn to successfully live out God’s Word in our daily lives (vs. 16)?
Apply God’s Word to your life:
- What is one area in which you need to practice biblical living?
- What does God’s Word say that you are to do?
- What wrong thinking needs to be confessed and replaced?
- What behavior do you practice over and over again?
- Who can encourage you on this journey?
Father, thank you for sending Jesus to live on this earth so that we have an example to follow. Today, I want to practice living rightly. Give me the patience to try over and over again and ask for help if I need it. I want to be like the person who built their house on the rock. I want to stand strong through the storms of life and rejoice in You daily. Amen.
Related verses to meditate on:
James 1:22-25 - Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.
