"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
1 John 1:6-7 - 6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.
According to verse 6, what determines whether we walk in the darkness or the light?
Hebrews 5:12-14 - 12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you have need again for someone to teach you the elementary principles of the oracles of God, and you have come to need milk and not solid food. 13 For everyone who partakes only of milk is not accustomed to the word of righteousness, for he is an infant. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil.
Why did the author of Hebrews say that they needed milk and not solid food?
How does a mature person learn to discern good and evil (vs.14)?
Apply God’s Word to your life:
- Ask God to search your heart. Evaluate whether you practice the truth. Ask Him to show you where you compromise His Word, or disobey it out right.
- Based on what you’ve discovered, what do you need to do to walk in God’s truth? Do you need to be taught the basics again? Discovery 1 starts on February 26th. Do you need a friend to hold you accountable or encourage you?
- What is one area you can begin to discern good from evil?
Father, thank you that You love me even though I disobey, I make excuses and I choose to walk in my weakness rather than in Your power. Today, I want to commit to growing up spiritually. I want to move beyond milk. I don’t want to just be able to say what’s good or evil, I want to be discerning and choose what is good and godly. Amen.
Related verses to meditate on:
2 Peter 1:5-11 - Now for this very reason also, applying all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence, and in your moral excellence, knowledge, and in your knowledge, self-control, and in your self-control, perseverance, and in your perseverance, godliness, and in your godliness, brotherly kindness, and in your brotherly kindness, love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they render you neither useless nor unfruitful in the true knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these qualities is blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins. Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; 1for in this way the entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will be abundantly supplied to you.
Proverbs 24:16 - For a righteous man falls seven times, and rises again, but the wicked stumble in time of calamity.
John 3:21 - But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.
