"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
Galatians 5:22-23a - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.
Joy is produced in our lives as we let God’s Spirit dwell in our hearts. To dwell means to live or to be at home in our lives. Ephesians 5:18 describes it as being filled or controlled by the Spirit.
Ephesians 5:17-21 - Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.
When we allow God’s Spirit to fill our lives, our hearts experience the joy of the Lord. The Spirit guides us into God’s truth. He helps us to understand the Bible. He convicts us of sin so that we can continue to be filled with His Spirit.
Apply God’s Word to your life:
Evaluate your day. Are you allowing the Spirit to dwell in your heart and lead your life?
What evidence is there that you have been allowing the Spirit to dwell and lead your life?
Ephesians 5:18 is a command. It’s God’s will for those who are saved to be filled with His Spirit. Confess your sin as it blocks the filling of God’s Spirit and ask Him to guide your life today.
Jesus, thank You for putting Your Spirit in my life to guide me and to produce Your fruit in my life. Forgive me for letting other things control my life and rob me of Your joy. I yield my will back to Your will. Fill me with Your Spirit today and help me to follow Your leading. Amen.
