"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice." Philippians 4:4
Begin your time with God in prayer:
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life. Yield your will to God’s will.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart:
As we seek to put into practice what we have learned, we need to recognize and accept our own weaknesses.
2 Corinthians 12:9 - 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
When Paul wanted God to remove the thorn in his flesh, why didn’t God do it (vs. 9)?
Why was Paul then able to boast in his weaknesses (vs. 9)?
What was the secret to his contentment in difficult circumstances (vs. 10)?
When you accepted Christ into your life, the Holy Spirit came to live in you. Every day, we have the choice to rely on ourselves or on the power of the Holy Spirit. Paul was able to be content in tough circumstances because he learned to rely on God’s power. He also prayed that we would know this power and be strengthened by it.
Apply God’s Word to your life:
- As you have been seeking to live rightly, has it been in your strength, or with reliance on God’s power? How do you know? Are you content?
- Confess your independence and ask God to fill you with His power to do what His Word is asking you to do.
Father, Your Word says that you have given me a spirit of power, love and self-discipline. Forgive me for trying to live rightly in my own strength. Help me to know the surpassing greatness of Your power toward me and strengthen me with it. Help me to reprogram my mind with Your Word and live it out in Your power. Amen.
