40 Days of Compassion - Day 20 - God's Purpose For Oneness

Begin your time with God in prayer.

Praise God for who He is.  Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him.  Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.

Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.

"I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.  The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me."  John 17:20-23

One of the most frequent comments we get from visitors to Sunrise is how loving we are.  The reason they point it out is that it is not experienced elsewhere.  God has a very good purpose for teaching us to love.  He wants the world to know about Jesus and His love for them.  The love and oneness that God desires in the church is so unnatural (supernatural) that when it is experienced, it draws people to Jesus.

Apply God’s Word to your life.
· In what ways have you been a part of creating the oneness that draws the world to Jesus?
· In what ways have you hindered the oneness that God desires by your thoughts, words or actions?
· What is one way you can encourage oneness this week?

Father, I praise You and thank You that You care about a lost and hurting world.  Forgive me for not understanding Your plan and for being more concerned about my plans, my schedule and my comfort zone. Love others through me this week that they may see Jesus in my life.  Amen.

Related verses to meditate on:

"… But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him, how does God's love abide in him?  Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.  Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends."  1 John 3:15-16

"For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God."  Ephesians 3:14-19
