Begin your time with God in prayer.
Praise God for who He is. Confess any sin so that nothing blocks your fellowship with Him. Ask God to use the Spirit and the Word to transform your life.
Let God’s Word penetrate your head and your heart.
Mark 12:30-31 is our verse of the year and we want to learn it. Write it out here:
"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life, is not from the Father but is from the world." 1 John 2:1-16
"…choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15
What we love matters! Jesus said the most important command is to love God. As we learn to love God, we are then equipped to love people and fulfill the next important command, to love our neighbors as ourselves. The problem is that because we live in the world, we have come to love the things of the world more than God and people. And those things take our money, our time, and our energy, making it difficult to fulfill God’s command to love Him and others. Learning to love God with all our heart, soul, mind and strength takes a reorientation of our affections.
Apply God’s Word to your life.
· What things of the world do you love? Be specific. What takes your time, your money, and your energy?
· Which of those things do you love more than God and people? Think about what excuses you make for not coming to church, for not taking time to read your Bible, and for not serving people.
· Pick one worldly thing today and make the choice to love God first.
Father, thank you for the many blessings we have. I am sorry that I have loved the things of this world more than You. Help me learn to love You by putting You first. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Amen.
